Our skin receives its color from a pigment called melanin. Special cells, melanocytes, create this pigment. If these cells become damaged or unhealthy, the production of melanin is affected and in turn, the color of the skin changes.

Some of the conditions that may alter these cells are: pregnancy, certain medications, sun exposure, trauma to the skin such as the results of after an accident, or recovering from injury. Also, when perfumes are applied to the skin, usually on sides of neck, and the skin is exposed to the UV rays of the sun stimulating the melanocytes to produce more melanin, and then the skin may become discolored.

If too much melanin is produced, known as hyper-pigmentation, the skin will show a brown or darker color.

If not enough melanin is produced, this is called vitiligo. The skin shows a very light, almost white color. People with this condition are known as Albinos.
